Years ago, whenever a friend from college and I had been to Mt. Rainer, on our way down the mountain we’d almost always stop at Iron Mike. It’s a mineral spring just off the road near Paradise. Take the path that follows the little stream up through the trees, and there’s a small, rocky pool, surrounded by trees, with

You may remember a few years ago when there was a big earthquake near Olympia, Washington, centered just off shore in the southern end of the Puget Sound. The epicenter of the quake was almost directly underneath my brother- and sister-in-law’s home. And we heard a very dramatic retelling of what it was like, and how the ground bucked and —–MORE

Last spring our family went to see a production of “The Boxcar Children” by the Oregon Children’s Theatre. For part of a Sunday afternoon, as we settled into our comfy seats and the lights went down around us, we were witnesses to the daily challenges of four children living on their own. The story began with them finding out that their parents had been killed in a car accident. And then, when they found out that the state might split them up to send them to different foster homes, they ran away. Out, away from town, they found an abandoned railroad boxcar that became their home. But they had to keep a low profile because the authorities were looking for them, and there was a reward posted for finding them. –MORE–

Have you ever been called upon to be a witness in court? A friend of mine was called to testify a few years back. He was driving by a small neighborhood business one night and saw a fire, so he called 9-1-1. It became a court case when arson was suspected, and the business owner was accused of setting the place on fire for insurance money. Things got complicated for my friend because he knew this business owner personally, so when it came to being a witness, he was pretty nervous. There was a lot at stake, and he wanted to be truthful and accurate in telling exactly what he had seen. He took his role as a witness very seriously indeed. –MORE–
